Relieve urinary problems related to BPH: diagnosis, treatments and personalized solutions with Dr. Olivier Dumonceau in Paris.

Introduction
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or prostatic adenoma, is a common condition after age 50. It often manifests as urinary problems that impair quality of life.
These symptoms are not inevitable. Solutions — medical, minimally invasive or surgical — exist to relieve, stabilize or correct the discomfort.
The goal: to support you towards lasting relief, tailored to your profile, while minimizing side effects.
Expertise in Prostate Adenoma
Expertise Adénome de la prostateDr Olivier DumonceauWhat is BPH for relieving urinary problems?
BPH refers to a benign enlargement of the prostate gland, which can compress the urethra or the base of the bladder. This compression alters urine flow and causes various symptoms—without being linked to cancer.
Over time, BPH can lead to complications: acute urinary retention, infections, bladder stones, or even kidney damage if bladder emptying is severely impaired.
Each case is unique: the extent of symptoms, the impact on daily life, the size of the prostate, and comorbidities are all factors that guide treatment.

Why choose REZUM treatment?
Before proposing a solution, a complete evaluation is necessary to confirm the cause, assess the severity, and rule out other conditions (such as prostate cancer or urethral stricture). This evaluation includes:
- Medical interview and collection of symptoms
(urinary scores, medical history, comorbidities) - Clinical examination
Specifically, a digital rectal exam to assess the prostate - Urine analysis
To detect an infection or the presence of blood - Urine flowmeter / flowmeter
To measure the speed of the urine stream - Measurement of post-void residual
Amount of urine remaining in the bladder after urination - Prostate ultrasound / bladder-prostate ultrasound
To estimate the volume, the presence of a median lobe, the morphology - PSA testing
In cases of suspected infection or before certain interventions - Additional examinations (MRI, cystoscopy, urodynamics)
If the context or the standard assessment requires it
This assessment helps to categorize urinary disorders — mild, moderate or severe — and to choose a personalized strategy.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
What are the first-line treatments for urinary problems related to BPH?
The treatment begins with simple rules (limit drinks in the evening, reduce caffeine and alcohol, treat constipation) and, if necessary, drug treatment: alpha-blockers, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors or herbal medicine.
What are the limitations of medications?
Medications relieve symptoms but do not permanently reduce prostate size. Their effect sometimes diminishes over time, and some cause fatigue, dizziness, or sexual dysfunction, prompting a move towards more permanent treatment.
When should interventional treatment be considered?
When discomfort persists despite medication, when complications arise (retention, infections, bladder stones, kidney problems), or when the patient wishes to discontinue daily treatment, minimally invasive solutions exist before resorting to traditional surgery.
Is it possible to remain without treatment if the discomfort is moderate?
Yes. BPH with few symptoms and no complications can simply be monitored. The important thing is regular follow-up with uroflowmetry and residual urine measurement, to intervene before the bladder becomes strained.
